A traffic stop on May River Road turned deadly near downtown Bluffton.
Earlier on Saturday, the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office initiated a traffic stop on a vehicle on May River Road near Red Cedar Street. The vehicle was driven by a subject who had an active felony warrant, according to officials.
The vehicle failed to stop for deputies, and a pursuit quickly ensued. BCSO said the subject was involved in an additional pursuit on Friday, but the chase was terminated.
Saturday’s chase ended when the subject vehicle collided with a tree and fence near the entrance to The Farm community on Buckwalter Parkway.
Deputies said at the time, there was an “exchange of gunfire” between sheriff’s deputies and the suspect.
BSCO reports the suspect is dead.
BSCO also reports that the event has been turned over to the South Carolina State Law Enforcement Division.
